Newspapers in the mid 1920’s were a buzz about a dance spreading in the African American communities of Harlem New York, born from the influence of the crucible of culture and music in Charleston, SC. The Post 1924 said it “will in due time become the newest rage in the terpsichorean(dance) art.” And the craze continues today. From the African rooted footwork spreading through night clubs in Harlem New York in the 20’s to the silver screen couples such as Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers in the 1930’s, this expansive dance has so much you can learn. In this class we will cover content from 1930’s partnered Charleston. Come enjoy its rhythm and energy that came to epitomize the Jazz Age.
